Dal clima alla biodiversità: al via la 40esima spedizione scientifica italiana in Antartide
Dal clima alla biodiversità. Questi i grandi settori di ricerca della 40esima spedizione italiana in Antartide, il luogo che da circa 15 milioni anni contribuisce in modo essenziale al bilancio termico della Terra. Nei giorni scorsi il primo gruppo di tecnici sono arrivati alla stazione Mario Zucchelli sul promontorio di Baia Terra Nova, che fino a febbraio 2025 vedrà impegnati 140 tra ricercatori, ricercatrici e tecnici in progetti di glaciologia, climatologia, sismologia, geomagnetismo e biodiversità. Le attività di ricerca si svolgeranno anche a bordo della nave rompighiaccio Laura Bassi salpata in questi giorni verso la nuova Zelanda, dove arriverà a fine novembre e da lì inizierà il suo viaggio verso l’Antartide il 9 dicembre con a bordo 28 unità di personale tecnico-scientifico.
Perchè l’Antartide
Le missioni italiane in Antartide vanno avanti da quasi 40 anni. Sono infatti iniziate il 23 dicembre 1985, con il Programma Nazionale di Ricerche (Pnra), finanziato dal ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca (Mur) e gestito dal Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (Cnr) per il coordinamento scientifico, da Enea per la pianificazione e l’organizzazione logistica delle attività presso le basi antartiche e dall’Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (Ogs) per la gestione tecnica e scientifica della nave rompighiaccio “Laura Bassi”.
